Douglas Smith Sr- Founder/Pastor
Rev. Dr. Douglas Smith was born and raised in Bainbridge, Ga. He has been married for 56 years. Pastor Smith and Sister Eudean Smith are the proud parents of five children.
Rev. Dr. Douglas Smith was licensed to preach by Reverend Julius Star and was ordained by the late Reverend Earl Johnson in the spring of 1963. Rev. Douglas Smith accepted his first Pastorialship at the Bethel Missionary Baptist Church of Medina, NY in 1968. In 1974, Pastor Smith was called to lead the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Kendall Mills, NY, where he remained until 1986. The latter part of 1986, he was called to Pastor at the Pentecostal Memorial Baptist Church.
He is one of the founders and is the current Pastor of the Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church of Rochester, NY established in January of 1992. Dr. Smith and Sister Smith have faithfully served our God, the church, and the community with a spirit of humility and meekness for over 50 years.
His pastorates have historically and traditionally been marked as builder. Perhaps it comes from working in construction, which he was originally employed for many years. Lead and strengthened by the Holy Spirit Pastor Smith was able to lead his congregations to success. Under his leadership, each church grew spiritually, financially, and physically. When asked about his accomplishments he stated “I have been blessed to have several church administrations and congregations that were hardworking, diligent, and faithful to the will of God enabling the fulfillment and achievement of God’s purpose, mission and vision in our collective and spiritual lives. God has also blessed me with a strong, committed, faithful, loving, caring, devoted, and praying wife who has been by my side through it all. She is my confident, my friend and the love of my life. We recognize that our faith, family (biological and church) and focus on God’s business is what sustains our lives and brings joy to our hearts. God wants it all and we freely give our all.
He was awarded the preacher of the year in 1995 by Mayor William Johnson. On May 18, 1999, Rev. Dr. Earl Holmes presented Rev. Smith with an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from McKenzie Theological Seminary of Mississippi.
He is known citywide and abroad, for his ability to preach, pray, sing, and teach. The work of this great Pastor does not stop in the Church; the entire community feels his presence.
Rev. Smith remains active in many community services and religious affiliations including but not limited to the: Great Lakes Baptist Association, Faith Community Alliance, Foreign Mission for the Rochester Area, Empire State Baptist Convention of New York State, National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, National Baptist Convention USA, Inc., and the United Church Ministries Alliance.
